Redwood Community Services Receives Grant for Improvements, Expansion at Tule House Facility
Redwood Community Services, Inc. is excited to have been awarded a grant for improvements and expansions at Tule House in Lake County, CA.
Tule House is a residential treatment program for mothers, founded in 2018. This unique program is designed to treat substance use disorder in a family-like setting where mothers may have their children with them. Moms are welcomed into the program whether their children are currently with them, in the child welfare system or with other family members and friends.
This 8-bed program is designed to treat substance use, using non-medical services in group and individual counseling settings. Women in the residential treatment program at Tule House participate in family centered treatment, which allows them to bring their children to live with them at the facility and engages their self-identified family within treatment as well. The length of stay for each woman is determined by medical necessity.
The awards are delivered through the Department of Health Care Services’ (DHCS) Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP) Round 4: Children and Youth grants.
Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced $480.5 million in awards for 54 projects to improve California’s behavioral health infrastructure for children and youth. This is the fourth of six rounds of the $2.2 billion BHCIP funding provided by the Legislature and the Governor, which was authorized in the fiscal year 2021-22 budget to construct, acquire, and expand behavioral health facilities and community-based care options as well as invest in mobile crisis infrastructure. Funds can only be used for facility capacity expansion.
The construction improvements will allow for Tule House to expand adding an additional eight beds at the facility, allowing 16 women to be served at any one time.
BHCIP is part of a broader commitment by the California Health & Human Services Agency (CalHHS) to improve the state’s behavioral health and long-term care continuum infrastructure.
Tule House’s expansion and other projects by grantees across the state will ensure care can be provided in the least restrictive settings by creating a wide range of options, including outpatient alternatives, urgent care, peer respite, wellness centers, and social rehabilitation models. These projects will allow alternatives to incarceration, hospitalization, homelessness, and institutionalization by better meeting the needs of vulnerable populations who face the greatest barriers to access. A variety of care placement options can provide a vital off-ramp from intensive behavioral health service settings, helping transition individuals, including the most vulnerable, to community living.
